Forest Investment Program: Development of Agroforestry for Sustainable Agriculture in Rwanda (FIP-PRODAR)

Background

The Government of Rwanda approached the Bank for Forest Investment Plan (FIP) development support after finalizing its REDD+ Preparation Proposal (R-PP) in 2014. In that regard, the Government of Rwanda received the loan and grant from the African Development Bank (AfDB) to finance the Forest Investment Program: Development of Agroforestry for Sustainable Agriculture in Rwanda (FIP-PRODAR Project); executed by the Ministry of Environment (Executing Agency) and implemented by the Rwanda Forestry Authority (Implementing Agency).

Project Objective:

The project strategic objective is to enhance climate resilient development and livelihoods in Rwanda through the restoration and stabilization of landscapes with Agroforestry systems to support sustainable agriculture and green growth. The project specific objectives are:

(1) Enhance landscape restoration and stabilization;

(2) Improve rural community livelihoods through sustainable Agroforestry value chain development; and

(3) Strengthen institutional and community adaptive skills and capacities for Agroforestry development.

Project intervention geographical area:

The project activities are undertaken in 8 districts of the country: Kamonyi, Muhanga, Ruhango, Nyanza, Huye, Gisagara, Nyaruguru, and Gakenke.

Project expected outputs

  • Agroforestry trees planting on radical or progressive Terraces: 18,000 Ha
  • Agroforestry tree species planting and maintenance in Coffee and Tea plantations:7,000 Ha
  • Restoration of river banks, streams, and gullies; shores of lakes in farmer's AF landscapes, with AF tree species: 100 Ha
  • Contribute to reduce biomass use for fuelwood by providing 10,000 Improved cooking stoves
  • Support climate resilience through providing Rainwater harvesting tanks (500 pieces)
  • Etc.
