TREPA

Transforming the Eastern Province through Adaption to Climate change

Background

Project Objective: Achieve a paradigm shift in land management practices in Rwanda’s Eastern Province from landscapes that are degraded, fragile and unable to sustain livelihoods in the face of climate change to restored ecosystems and landscapes through building community resilience to enhance livelihoods, food and water security of the most vulnerable rural population.

In collaboration with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Enabel, ICRAF, World Vision and Cordaid. TREPA will restore 60,000 ha of degraded landscapes including 40,000ha of degraded crop lands, 10,000ha of degraded silvo-pastoral lands; 6,545 ha of degraded small-holder private woodlots; 1,400 ha degraded public forest and degraded protective areas such as roads, lake shores, rivers, and Akagera buffer zones. The project intends to support the dissemination of clean cooking fuel and technology to 100,000 households and develop value chains for climate resilient agricultural and agroforestry products to incentive beneficiaries for their efforts and involvement in landscape restoration activities in the targeted areas within all seven districts of the Eastern Province.

Geographical location: Kirehe, Ngoma, Bugesera, Rwamagana, Kayonza, Giatsibo and Nyagatare Districts of the Eastern Province.
