Research Division Mandate

The Forestry Research Division at Rwanda Forestry Authority is mandated to coordinating and conducting quality fundamental and applied forestry research that generates scientific knowledge to guide forestry policy and strategies for wellbeing of Rwanda’s society and environment. Among major roles of the division include;

Major roles of the division

  • Improving tree and forest productivity, establishing of tree reproductive materials (TRM) suitable for different ecological and climatic conditions in the country.

  • Contributing to protection and conservation of forests through regular monitoring of forests for endangerment, including tree genetic resources conservation for threatened species.

  • To improve agroforestry technologies and innovations and silviculture for enhanced adoption of agroforestry systems

  • To develop and improve timber and non-timber forest products for the diversified income generation from forest.

  • To produce and disseminate quality (TRM) to users and forestry communities (farmers, etc).

  • Increasing of woodlots acreage, and improving tree seed stands’ capacity as quality tree collection banks.

  • To avail and disseminate translatable research findings easy to access and utilize by the communities for improved social, economic and environmental well-being of Rwandan people.

  • To foster strong collaboration in research and projects development with its stakeholders and partners

  • To enhance the sustainable development, conservation and efficient use of Rwanda's forest resources.

  • The division is also responsible for periodic reporting of forest sector progress.
