AfDB Team Assesses Progress of FIP-PRODAR Project in Gakenke District

The Forest Investment Program (FIP): Development of Agroforestry for Sustainable Agriculture in Rwanda (PRODAR) Project and the African Development Bank (AfDB) Team conducted a field visit to assess the progress of the project interventions in Gakenke District in the Northern Province. The team was received by Aime Niyonsenga, the Vice Mayor in Charge of Economic Development. 

Key Interventions of FIP–PRODAR in Gakenke District:

  • Construction of radical terraces (200 ha)

  • Restoration of degraded landscapes (6500ha)

  • Forest Rehabilitation 

  • Fruit tree plantation,

  • Rehabilitation of buffer zone of Ruhondo lake(4km),

  • Support to farmers through: Distribution of small livestock, improved cooking stoves, water tanks

  • Strengthening cooperatives engaged in agroforestry value chains

  • Capacity building for local communities and stakeholders

The team conducted the field visit to observe the agroforestry intervention sites identified in Kamubuga Sector and engaged with the community (beneficiaries).
