Rwanda readies for 6th World Congress on Agroforestry

As Rwanda looks to host the 6th World Congress on Agroforestry, the Rwanda Forestry Authority together with the Ministry of Environment as well as key partners that include International Union of Agroforestry, just to mention a few, convened at the Rubavu Serena Hotel for two days until this Friday the 19th July 2024, to craft a robust communication plan with a focus on securing strategic partnerships and raising funds for the congress that is taking place in May next year.

In the heart of Rwanda, nestled within its verdant landscapes and under the stewardship of the Ministry of Environment (MoE), a pivotal initiative is underway. The Rwanda Forestry Authority (RFA), in collaboration with the International Union of Agroforestry (IUAF), has secured the prestigious opportunity to host the 6th World Congress on Agroforestry (WCA) in 2025. This momentous event promises to be more than just a gathering of minds—it is set to be a global platform where researchers, policymakers, farmers, and stakeholders converge to shape the future of agroforestry.

Setting the Stage: Rwanda's Commitment to Agroforestry

Rwanda, a nation known for its commitment to environmental sustainability and economic development, has placed agroforestry at the forefront of its strategy. With its lush landscapes and a burgeoning smallholder farmer population, Rwanda sees agroforestry not only as a means to enhance agricultural productivity but also as a vital tool in climate change adaptation and mitigation.

‘’ Rwanda always wants to take it to the next level by safeguarding natural resources through agroforestry trees, emphasized Dr. Ivan Gasangwa, Head of Research at Rwanda Forestry Authoriy

Under the auspices of the MoE and RFA, Rwanda has been advancing research and practices in agroforestry systems. These efforts aim to foster sustainable and resilient agro-ecosystems, tackling ecological, social, and economic challenges simultaneously. The upcoming WCA in 2025 represents a significant milestone in Rwanda's journey towards sustainable development, poised to amplify its impact on both a national and global scale.

The Vision for WCA 2025: A Global Platform for Collaboration

The World Congress on Agroforestry serves as a premier global event, drawing together thought leaders and practitioners from diverse backgrounds. Scheduled to convene in Kigali, Rwanda's vibrant capital, the congress will provide a unique forum for exchanging knowledge, sharing experiences, and forging collaborations. With over 1,500 expected delegates, including researchers, academia, development partners, and representatives from the corporate and public sectors, WCA 2025 is anticipated to spark transformative discussions and initiatives.

The congress will explore cutting-edge research, innovative practices, and policy frameworks aimed at advancing agroforestry. It aims not only to showcase Rwanda's achievements but also to catalyze global efforts towards sustainable development goals related to agriculture, forestry, and climate resilience.

Challenges and Opportunities: The Role of Communication and Fundraising

Organizing an international congress of this magnitude entails significant challenges and opportunities. Effective communication is paramount to ensure widespread engagement and participation. Moreover, robust fundraising strategies are essential to secure necessary funding and partnerships to support the congress's logistical and programmatic needs.

Recognizing these imperatives, the Ministry of Environment and its partners have embarked on a strategic retreat. This two-day workshop aimed to develop comprehensive strategies for communication, fundraising, and logistical preparations leading up to WCA 2025. Key stakeholders including members of the secretariat committee, partnership and fundraising committee, communication team, and scientific committee core team were convened to chart a course that ensures the congress's success.

Developing a Communication Strategy: Engaging Stakeholders Worldwide

The first objective of the retreat was to draft a communication strategy tailored to maximize outreach and engagement. A detailed plan outlined the timeline, key messages, and platforms for disseminating information about WCA 2025. The strategy aims not only to attract delegates but also to highlight Rwanda's leadership in agroforestry and its commitment to sustainable development.

Central to this strategy is leveraging digital platforms, traditional media, and direct outreach to targeted audiences. Social media campaigns, webinars, press releases, and newsletters will serve as vehicles to generate interest and encourage participation. By showcasing the congress's themes, keynote speakers, and interactive sessions, the communication strategy seeks to position WCA 2025 as a must-attend event on the global agroforestry calendar.

Forging Partnerships and Fundraising: Mobilizing Support for Sustainable Development

Equally critical is the development of a robust fundraising and partnership strategy. This entails identifying potential sponsors, partners, and funding sources aligned with the congress's objectives. The strategy will outline sponsorship packages, benefits for sponsors, and mechanisms for engaging corporate, philanthropic, and governmental entities.

During the retreat, participants brainstormed innovative approaches to fundraising, such as corporate sponsorships, grant applications, and donor outreach campaigns. They also discussed ways to engage development agencies, academic institutions, and private sector organizations interested in advancing agroforestry research and practices.

Pathway to Success: Preparation and Coordination

Preparation for WCA 2025 involves meticulous planning and coordination across multiple fronts. The retreat has clarified roles and responsibilities for the secretariat committee, ensuring efficient organization and seamless execution of congress activities. It has established timelines for key milestones, such as the launch of registration, submission of abstracts, and selection of speakers.

Moreover, the retreat aims to foster collaboration and networking among participants. By aligning strategies and pooling resources, stakeholders can leverage collective expertise to address challenges and capitalize on opportunities. Workshops and breakout sessions provided platforms for exchanging ideas, refining strategies, and building partnerships that extend beyond the congress itself.

A Shared Vision for Sustainable Agroforestry

As Rwanda prepares to host the 6th World Congress on Agroforestry in 2025, the stakes are high and the opportunities abundant. This strategic retreat marks a pivotal moment in shaping the congress's success. Through effective communication and robust fundraising efforts, Rwanda aims to not only showcase its achievements but also to catalyze global action towards sustainable agroforestry practices.

The outcomes of the retreat—detailed communication and fundraising strategies, defined roles and responsibilities, and enhanced collaboration—will lay the foundation for a transformative congress. Beyond Kigali, WCA 2025 will resonate globally, influencing policy, driving innovation, and fostering partnerships that advance the science, practice, and policy of agroforestry worldwide.

In the coming months, as plans solidify and anticipation builds, Rwanda invites the world to join hands in realizing a shared vision of sustainable development through agroforestry. ‘’Together, we can cultivate a future where agriculture thrives in harmony with nature, economies flourish, and communities prosper’’. Concluded Dr. Concorde Nsengumuremyi, Director General of the Rwanda Forestry Authority.
