TREPA& COMBIO: RFA Launches Major Training Initiative for Block Leaders in Eastern Province

The Rwanda Forestry Authority (RFA) is launching a significant training program aimed at empowering 2,424 block leaders across seven districts in Eastern Province. This initiative, a part of the “Transforming Eastern Province through Adaptation” (TREPA) project, focuses on sustainable agroforestry practices, and will run from September 22 to October 1, 2024. The goal is to foster local leadership and promote responsible forestry stewardship, helping communities thrive alongside nature.

TREPA is funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and implemented in collaboration with partners like the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Enabel, ICRAF, World Vision, and Cordaid. The project aims to rehabilitate 60,000 hectares of degraded land, which includes restoring 40,000 hectares of cropland and 10,000 hectares of silvo-pastoral land, along with an additional 50,000 hectares of agroforestry and ranch lands. The COMBIO intervention will focus on 8,000 hectares of selected crop and ranch lands to introduce climate-resilient native trees and shrubs.

Empowering Communities for Sustainable Practices

Jerome Tuyisingize, the Project Manager of TREPA, emphasized the crucial role of trees in Rwandan life: “Trees provide shade, timber, fruit, and help prevent soil erosion. As we nurture our forests, we nurture our future.”

A key component of the TREPA initiative is community involvement. Recognizing that successful environmental restoration relies on local farmers, TREPA is implementing a comprehensive training program for block leaders. These leaders will learn essential skills to guide their communities in sustainable practices.

Focused Training for Lasting Impact

The training sessions will span seven days, with each day dedicated to a specific district. RFA staff, alongside local authorities, will facilitate engaging and practical sessions using various teaching tools. The curriculum covers three main areas:

Tree Planting and Maintenance: Participants will learn best practices for selecting and caring for trees, instilling a sense of responsibility for the trees they plant.

Roles and Responsibilities of Block Leaders: This segment clarifies how block leaders can effectively communicate with farmers, mobilize community participation, and oversee project implementation.

Green Smart Agriculture Practices: Techniques like composting, mulching, and rainwater collection will be introduced to improve soil fertility and agricultural productivity while promoting forestry conservation.

Restoration and Economic Upliftment

Beyond ecological restoration, TREPA also aims to enhance the livelihoods of local communities. The project plans to promote clean cooking fuels and technologies to 100,000 households, reducing reliance on unsustainable energy sources and mitigating deforestation.

Moreover, TREPA will develop value chains for climate-resilient agricultural and agroforestry products, providing economic incentives for community participation in restoration efforts.

Building Capacity for Sustainable Leadership

A crucial aspect of TREPA’s success lies in its focus on building local capacity. By training block leaders, the project fosters ownership and responsibility within communities. These leaders will share knowledge with farmers and advocate for sustainable practices, creating a ripple effect of environmental stewardship.

The training is tailored to local contexts, ensuring relevance and effectiveness. This approach respects local knowledge and practices, fostering greater community engagement.

As block leaders gain skills in tree planting and agroforestry management, they will be better equipped to lead restoration efforts. The training aims to boost their confidence, enabling them to mobilize community participation and oversee successful project implementation.

A Transformative Journey Ahead

The anticipation among Eastern Province communities is high as they prepare to embrace innovative practices that promise to restore their lands and empower their people. The TREPA project represents a hopeful model for sustainable development, combining ecological restoration with community empowerment and economic growth.

As the Eastern Province embarks on this transformative journey, the collaboration between government entities, NGOs, and local communities showcases a shared commitment to a greener future. With the dedication of block leaders, farmers, and community members, the TREPA project is set to make a lasting impact, nurturing both the land and the future of their communities.
